Gimme gimme more…
World — By FTR News on May 20, 2009 at 3:46 pmApparently Britney Spears is more popular than Barack Obama on Internet searches. Am I really surprised? Well, no. How could the world’s most powerful nation voting in their first black president beat the fact that Britney Spears, meltdown Queen, has made her comeback? Hmm.
I suppose that it just shows how we are now so celebrity obsessed. But then that argument falls on it’s knees in many ways too. Looking at how slick and how much coverage the US election got, surely Obama is a celebrity in his own right?
But he has the one thing that pulls him down; he is still a politician, and to too many people that will be deemed as boring. And now the election is over, it’s amazing how quickly Obama fever has died down. Merely a few weeks ago I couldn’t walk down the street without overhearing the mention of his name, but now, well it’s lucky if I hear it once throughout the day in general conversational terms.
But Britney, well she has never left people’s topics of conversations for the past year. The very public meltdown that resulted in her losing custody of her children, her marriage split, shaving her head, going out with no underwear on, and finally; checking into rehab. The ultimate celebrity cliché. It seems nowadays you cannot be true celebrity unless you have been to rehab. Maybe that is actually Obama’s downfall. Maybe a spell in a smokers rehab clinic would do him a favour in popularity searches, seeing as it has now been exposed that he is actually a smoker having gone to all that effort to hide it throughout the whole election.
To be honest, having grown up in a massive celebrity culture; I can see why it is tempting to find Britney more appealing. But at the end of the day, should we not really be searching and finding out about people who actually have an impact on our lives (although I know there will be a few of my friends who are convinced Britney’s albums have changed their lives)? Britney will have her career for a few more years (unless she carries on being slated for performances like last Saturday), but Obama really will change things and hopefully will be much more influential with a longer career history than a pop princess.
